We share recipes and ask and answer questions from “How do you feed your family at night when you don’t walk in the door until 5:30 and you have a soccer game at 6 and piano lessons at 6:15 ... on opposite ends of town?” to “What’s your Thanksgiving menu this year?” to “Remember that punch you made at Christmas? What was the recipe?” So come on in to our virtual dinner group, pour yourself a glass of wine, and let’s start cooking together.
Over the long weekend I made a turkey dinner. Love grilling it but it was cooler and we were busy so I just roasted the turkey. We now have a whole week of turkey leftovers. My reason for the meal in the first place. I did turkey pot pie - a filling and tasty first day of school meal. Tonight I'm doing meatball and pasta - Maeve's request, she's not as big a fan of Turkey pot pie. Tomorrow night will be turkey sandwiches because we have football and a back to school meeting. And I see Turkey soup next week when we get a little cooler.
ReplyDeleteI am making chili and will also pull out my crockpot and get some soups going
ReplyDeleteTuesday we have steak and chicken Burritos, leftover meat from Monday's BBQ. For Wed. Therese requested make to order omeletes, hash browns, etc.. It wasn't a great 1st day back to school meal as we were tired and ate and shifts, but everyone was happy. Tonight was Spaghetti and Meat sauce, I tried the sauce in the crock pot, but it didn't cook down enough (so I threw it on the stove and now have 4 glass jars in the fridge:). Tomorrow is left over Ribs from the weekend.
ReplyDeleteI'm having this same issue. My problem is also that everyone needs to eat at different times:
ReplyDeleteWill comes home from school at 2 and has basketball 2x a week at 6 or 7 (he's easiest, though, he usually wants a bowl of cereal at any time of day).
Evan comes home from football at 5:30 and is starving then, but the rest of the family is not home or ready to eat. If he has a sandwich or snack, it's either not enough or he doesn't want dinner at 7 pm, when we're all ready.
Jude comes home from school, delivers his papers, has piano one day & drums another, and football 3x a week from 5-7. He can't eat a lot before football, but is starving, and exhausted & ready for bed after it. Too late for him to eat and get to bed at a decent hour.
Fred doesn't get home until about 6:30, so a 5:00 or 5:30 dinner would be sans father.
To add to the eating disorder aspect, Grace wants to eat any time food comes out.
This was really the problem I was going to wrestle with today to try to come up with a daily plan. If anyone has suggestions, let me know!
The extra individual chicken pot pies from last weekend's Confirmation party kept us going (with Will and Jude at least) through most of the week. In fact, Jude, Grace, and my father-in-law had the last 3 for lunch yesterday.
Yesterday I put pulled pork in the crockpot, and if there's any left after today's post-Jude-football/Patriots-game-on-tape dinner, Jude and Evan will love that as a filling "snack" pre- and post-practice this week.
I'm thinking of making my friend, Vickie's white chicken chili in the crockpot tomorrow. I haven't made it in a while, and it'd be something good to have in there for a few days.
I think I may do a pot of meatballs and sausages too, a sub is always a good, quick meal for my boys at whatever hour.
Now I just need to address the fact that Evan's eating 2 breakfasts and 2 lunches at school most days. I hope that boy's metabolism never catches up with him ...
Katie: I feel your pain! In addition to where everyone has to be, my problem is also that at least with the younger ones, I have to stay with them. Also, for Holland's swim team (2X week starting this week), it is far enough away that it doesn't necessarily pay to come home and go back... so, we are looking at not doing too many all-family meals together too often.
ReplyDeleteWe did pulled pork last week and sausage and meatballs (though I served it over pasta) last week. I also did a crock pot chicken chili that Brendan loved -- chicken, diced tomatoes, onions, peppers, olives, cheese and served it with tortilla chips.
It is Sunday night, we just got back from Baltimore and are out every night this week and I have no idea what I will make! Once I decide, I'll post.
